Fat Tuesday Fun!

March 3

It’s almost Mardi Gras!  A time for celebrations & eating yummy, traditional treats–like king cakes and paczkis!  Two of my family’s favorite treats and new traditions!  Just in case you aren’t familiar with either–we’re going to focus on both today since there’s still time to indulge if you wish!  I had never heard of a paczki (pronounced like “poonch key”) until we moved to Toledo–but they’re a mouth-watering pastry stuffed with fruit or cream fillings much like a doughnut.  These pastries are not affiliated with Mardi Gras celebrations but are a Polish tradition of using up sugars and fats before Lent begins and are offered for a limited time prior to Fat Tuesday.  Knowing we can get them only once a year makes them a much anticipated treat!  So if you live in the Midwest, popular with Polish communities, get to your local bakery asap–you might be able to get in on the tasty fun before these treats are gone ’till next year!

We all need some inspiration from time to time…which is why Sarah and I started our Giggle Evening of Inspiration Workshops a few years ago!  A time to gather together and create something special…and I’m not just referring to the item we make.  It’s an evening of acquiring new friendships, fresh ideas and motivating each other to follow our dreams!  So this year, in honor of inspiration, the workshop will consist of creating an inspiration or memory board…a tangible version of a Pinterest board…holding dear memories, motivations, and fabulous ideas!  Please join us Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m. (at my home this time) for this lovely evening… check out our “happenings” page for more information.  We would also love your feedback or suggestions…the best ideas come from many heads!  So while we plan for this next workshop…

The nice thing about decorating for holidays or any celebration is that you can be whimsical, have a little fun and enjoy it–it’s only temporary after all!  One of our favorite ways to decorate at Giggle, and in each of our personal homes, is with paper!  Whether it’s a banner, tissue poms & tassels, or simple garlands, paper is a lovely and very inexpensive way to get creative for your celebrations!  Here’s an example of a simple Valentine garland made from craft paper & strung with twine–every bit as lovely as store-bought without the price tag!  And when you make it yourself, it fits your style and personality just perfectly!

What a winter we’ve had!  We rarely have snow days around here but this year we’ve had several…much to the delight of my children and I’m sure many more!  Today’s post was inspired by a school project that was assigned yesterday in anticipation of our day off!  Kids were told to make a snow cone from the fresh blanket that covers our village!  What a great idea–and a lot of fun!  Here’s a peek at another snow day activity that brought smiles to everyone!

Neapolitan Valentine

Valentine’s Day is associated with hearts, flowers, and, of course, sweets!  A simple and delicious way to show someone you care…and even better–you can make them yourself!  The Valentine treat we want to share today was inspired by some pantry recycling.  While cleaning out cupboards, baggies of mismatched marshmallows from holiday hot cocoas were re-used (instead of thrown out) for some traditional Rice Krispie treats.  Dumping several varieties into the pan–regular, pink peppermint, and chocolate–made me think of Neapolitan ice cream!  The Neapolitan Valentine Krispie was born!  I doubt the idea is original–but it sure is cute and so easy to do…so let us introduce you to this Valentine treat & a sweet way to serve it up!

Winter is the perfect time to freshen and organize your home so when spring finally reveals itself the indoor jobs are done!  A fresh coat of paint does wonders…whether it updates walls or revitalizes a great piece of furniture, paint is a great way to breathe new life into a room!  It’s funny how a little bit of paint gets you motivated to clean, organize and rearrange your room in a way that feels brand new!  Here is the tale of two dressers that with a fresh coat of white brought new life to a room…

Today we would like to share a favorite thing that both Sarah and I love…adorable correspondence cards from Kate Spade!  A holiday gift we each received from a mutual & dear friend, these lovely note cards are as sweet as they are functional!  The art of correspondence the old-fashioned way is  slowly declining…but there is still something so special about receiving a handwritten message–with thoughtful wishes that accompany each stroke of the pen!  If you are looking for a gift, or just want to treat yourself (and family & friends that will be receiving your notes), consider correspondence cards.  Check out katespade.com to see her collection of desktop & stationery items…you won’t be disappointed!
