Derby Day is just around the corner!  Whether you’re a racing fanatic or just enjoy a good mint julep, this day gives us reason to celebrate no matter!  Today I want to share a sweet and simple DIY party decoration that can make your celebration extra festive. It doesn’t matter if it’s a big party or small, this project can enhance any table or even a platter of goodies or drinks!  I’m excited to share how easy it is…and you might have some of the supplies laying around in your house!  Let’s get ready for the fastest two minutes in sports…

serve up a derby day diy!

a simple tray of cocktails appears more celebratory with a whimsical decoration added to it!

here’s what you need to make this one:

a toy horse figurine

white glue & a glue gun

assorted moss (i used grass powder & preserved moss)

a potted plant

a trophy shaped vase or planter

a stem of miniature roses

many of the supplies you might have, be sure to shop your house or kid’s toy chest before you buy!

cover your figuring in white glue…

then place it in a container and sprinkle with a layer of fine, craft moss, any kind will do…

craft tip:

this step is not to fully cover the figurine.  it will help to create softer edges and be the base for the next layer. you can find this type or similar options in the modeling area of a craft store. this step could be eliminated & just skip to hot gluing the preserved moss to the horse.  if you skip, i might suggest using dark green spray paint to disguise the natural color of the figurine and allow you to use less topcoat moss.

once the glue is dry you can use hot glue to add pieces of preserved moss until it is covered.  don’t worry if some falls off or if it looks messy.

DIY topiary

you can clean up the shape with some scissors.  just trim the wild pieces until you’re happy with the look…

now this little topiary can crown your planter!  i simply dropped a small pot of ground cover into a vase that resembled a trophy.

place the horse in the middle and embellish with the tiny roses by merely tucking them into the foliage…

style the platter!

mint juleps are a derby day must!  mocktail versions are equally as refreshing!
