Sand Art Centerpiece

Do you remember sand art projects as a kid?  Simple containers filled with whimsical layers of color in soft, beach-swept patterns!  Sand art creations are so intriguing and very easy to make, which is why they’re a top pick for crafting with the kiddos!  And bonus…they’re still as fun to create as an adult as it was as a kid so why not make a grown-up version!?  Today I’d like to share a really fun and easy project that can be turned into a unique centerpiece for any room…all inspired by craft sand!  I decided to head to the craft store to grab some sand supplies to make something fun for my table and was also thrilled to discover how inexpensive the jars of colored sand actually were!  So I grabbed a few of my favorites and came straight home to complete my crafty task!  I adore projects that are quick and easy…see how simple it is to make a summer inspired centerpiece!

mini sand dune sculptures…

all you need to create sand art is a clear container, sand, and a funnel.  i purchased some sand from one of my favorite craft stores–Hobby Lobby, but everything else was found in my home.  the colors i chose reminded me of the beach, the water, and the colorful sunsets…

i gathered a trio of clear containers (two stemmed glasses and a footed bowl) to hold the colorful sand.  then i used my kitchen funnel to help make thin, wispy layers…

and filled each with wavy stripes reaching half-way or almost to the top…

you can add the colors however you like…and by layering the sand in various thicknesses you create the soft, rolling look of an actual dune!

then i topped each glass with an air plant and gathered them together onto a mirror to reflect more of the colorful layers…

air plants will grow just about anywhere and don’t need to be in soil or water…hence the “air” portion of the name!  It’s easy to nudge them into the sand so they will stand upright.  you’ll just need to mist them once in a while to keep ’em green.  i’ll remove mine from the sand when i water and let them dry completely before reinserting them so i don’t make a mess of my “artwork”!

and if greens aren’t your thing, try sea shells or other beach treasures to top off your creations!  personally, i’m really loving air plants right now and they make the centerpiece look a tad tropical!

so make it yourself, or get the kids involved…you really can’t go wrong with the design!
