Hunting for Treasure!

Monday I shared some Michigan beach fun…but I did mention that we spent some time searching for treasure didn’t I?  So whenever we head up north it’s always on the agenda to make a pitstop in Grand Rapids!  Not just because I love to pass by my old apartment, drive by my very first home, or reminisce about my old stomping grounds…but because this city has so much to offer including some wonderfully unique shops!  Even though the town has changed a lot since I lived within its limits, my parents shop here regularly so they’re up to speed on all the best off-the-beaten-path places that really shouldn’t be missed!  Let me share with you some of my old and new favorites…

Michigan Road Trip!

I hope everyone had a festive and joyful Fourth of July holiday!  To me, once the 4th arrives it feels as if summer has undeniably taken hold and I’m almost in full summer swing!  And if there’s one thing I love most about summer vacation it’s being able to take some spur-of-the-moment road trips…which is exactly what my family did last week!  We decided to sneak in a mini vacation that coordinated with some meetings my hubby had in Michigan.  So we packed up the car and headed up north for a few days of relaxing, visiting family, strolling the beach, and stopping in some wonderful shops for a little treasure hunting!  Today I’m sharing the wonderful sights of the windswept beaches of Lake Michigan…the water so blue with the sun’s rays dancing across the waves it was almost like watching the twinkle of fireworks once again!  If you get a chance to explore any of the wonderful beaches of Michigan…I would definitely do it!  There’s plenty to choose from, each with it’s own personality but all with the same beauty!  Have a peek at Ludington…

Today I’d like to share some of the simple DIY projects that I used for my pink party last week.  It makes entertaining so much easier if you have some little things done ahead of time…leaving you with less prep work so that you can relax once your guests arrive and enjoy the company!  I love to pass along helpful hints and ideas that I use to make entertaining so much easier!  I hate to think that a party might never happen due to the stress of planning it…and let’s face it, there’s always a little stress!  But the end result far outweighs the apprehension…friends and family spending time together is why we have gatherings, not to show our party planning skills!  And though I love the planning part too, it comes secondary to the people I plan it for!  Creating a party theme can also be done with very little money, time, and artistic talent–and will still make your guests feel special!  The simple projects I did ahead of time were obviously geared toward my pink flamingo theme, but you can take the general ideas and cater them to any event…whether it has a specific theme or not!  I’m also sharing some of my other time & money saving tips that make it possible for me to entertain often!  I hope you find some inspiration for your next celebration!

My family and I have been trying hard over the last year or so to make a point to have small groups of friends in as often as we can!  Everyone is so busy these days it’s practically impossible to see all the people we love to spend time with…and while the timing doesn’t always work for everyone, we’re going to keep right on trying until we’ve gotten to everyone!  So during a week when my husband was traveling I decided to open the doors again…but for girls only this time!  Not only did it provide me with a perfect opportunity to see some of my pals for some girl-time but also allowed me to decorate the patio with a color I don’t get to use often…PINK!  Living in a house full of boys isn’t conducive to decorating with girly colors…even though I find ways to sneak some in from time to time!  But an all out Pepto Bismol fest just doesn’t happen around here…until recently!  So, needless to say, I had a little fun.  Have a peek at my summer inspired, pink and girly gathering!

I was out shopping yesterday…not the fun kind of shopping but ordinary, necessity type shopping.  But while I was out trudging I spied a really cute idea and the inspiration for a holiday craft was born!  So instead of heading home, I detoured to the craft store to grab a couple inexpensive supplies so I could try and recreate this adorable idea for a patriotic centerpiece!  And you may be wondering what it was that I saw that got me so inspired?…oversized firecrackers!  I thought this fun stick of dynamite might make a festive decoration for our Fourth of July celebration…and I knew I could make one for a fraction of the price tag on the ones in the shop!  I love DIY projects that are easy, inexpensive, and relatively quick to create…especially for those holidays that seem to come and go before you blink an eye!  But patriotic celebrations kick-start all the summer fun and I just can’t help myself from decorating the patio with some red, white, & blue!  So let me share this festive DIY…there’s plenty of time to grab some supplies and have some~

A Little Summer Learning

So a really funny thing happened over the weekend…while I was continuing my spring cleaning, I gathered some old games, books, and flashcards to sort through and donate the ones the kids had outgrown.  I used to keep these items in a cupboard in my living room…it made it easy to grab those learning tools for some quick review and of course the games for when the words “I’m bored” were uttered!  Thinking my boys were WAY past the flash card days, I began to group them on the table and in my common fashion, got sidetracked by another task!  There sat a pile of cards…not just filled with math facts, but some with geographical questions and others with historical facts including American presidents.  To our complete surprise, my husband and I both overheard the boys talking about the presidents and soon realized that they were actually quizzing each other with those flashcards!  We all eventually got involved trying to answer the questions and everyone was ACTUALLY having fun!  Needless to say, I decided to hang on to that particular stack of cards!  This made me wonder if I left some of these items out on the coffee table if they might possibly get used?  I know most kids these days do have a share of summer homework…which I think is great!  However, when the subject of summer homework comes up in our house…let’s just say it’s not always a popular topic!  But this moment of active and unsolicited involvement with the flashcards left me with a glimmer of hope that some extra academic activities might take place if given an opportunity!  So I decided to gather a few learning tools and books of fun facts that I hadn’t yet gotten rid of to test this theory out!  What I noticed over the weekend was that the boys were just playing around and a family game of “questions” evolved!  My coffee table is now filled with the potential spur-of-the-moment family “game” or just some educational “browsing”…and I’m pretty sure it will encourage a little extra summer learning!

Flower Power

If I had to pick one thing to make my spaces feel fresh, look lovely, smell wonderful, and just make me happy…it would have to be fresh flowers!  Whether it’s a huge bouquet or just a tiny one, it really is amazing how those pretty posies can make a room seem joyful!  And it’s almost summer now so we can incorporate pots of wonderful blooms on our patios or any sunny location!  I’m lucky to have some flower gardens in my yard but a lot of our property is in the shade…which doesn’t produce lots of blooming color!  But I find that even vases filled with fern and other foliage can still do wonders for a room!  Of course, you can always stop by the local florists to grab some cut flowers and now the farmers markets are abundant with inexpensive bouquets of what’s currently blooming!  These are great options for when there’s not much to choose from in the yard or for anyone who doesn’t have access to a garden.  So no more excuses!  Go get some cuttings from the yard, a blooming planter, or treat yourself now and again with a bouquet from the store…

see the power of the flower!
